A Teacher’s Review of the ViewSonic LS550WH WXGA Short Throw LED Projector
As an educator, I am always on the lookout for new ways to improve my student’s learning experience and outcomes. One of my favorite ways to do this was by introducing projectors into my classroom during the summer before school started again. The ViewSonic LS550WH WXGA Short Throw LED Projector was one of the best purchases I have made in years, and here are some reasons why…
When I saw that ViewSonic was coming out with their LS550WH Interactive LED projector, I knew I had to have one. I currently use the ViewSonic PJD5533w as my main presentation tool, and I love it. However, when giving presentations to larger audiences, it can be frustrating to know that many of the people in the back can’t see the slides or graphics clearly due to the poor lighting conditions and general distance from the front of the room.
Have you ever wanted to bring the classroom up to your students? Now you can! The ViewSonic LS550WH WXGA Short Throw LED Projector not only gives you all the images you need but also provides the convenience of portability and energy efficiency. If you have an AV system at school but are looking to supplement it with new equipment, then look no further than the ViewSonic LS550WH WXGA Short Throw LED Projector; it has everything you need and more!
ViewSonic LS550WH WXGA DLP Projector
The Viewsonic LS550WH is an excellent candidate for many settings where 1280×800 (WXGA) resolution would suffice. It works well with spreadsheets and graphics while also performing adequately at 1080p media playback. There are some issues such as rainbows appearing in video content when taking the monitor out of the box; so potential buyers will want to take this into consideration when making a purchase decision.
- RGB LED light source lasts for the life of the unit; rated at 30,000 hours in full power mode
- Bright for an LED projector; rated at 3,000 LED and 2,000 ANSI lumens; measured at 1,607 ANSI
- Short throw gives big images in tight spaces
- Matching color and white brightness in Movie mode helps deliver good color accuracy, particularly for a DLP business projector
- Full HD 3D support
- The single HDMI port is the only input
- The 2-watt speaker offers too low a volume to be useful
- Showed rainbow artifacts often enough in our tests that those who see them easily may find them annoying
The Viewsonic LS550WH projector is one of a new breed of projectors designed to be placed directly on top of a table, boardroom table, or conference table. It is not only short in height but very short throw as well – meaning that it can display images from about 6-10 feet away from any type of projection surface. This makes it ideal for executive and management meetings, sales presentations and many other situations where you may want to show something from a very close proximity.
The ViewSonic LS550W does not disappoint when it comes to performance. Whether you’re watching a high-def movie or playing a video game, everything looks great on its 720p HD screen. It offers up to 2,500 ANSI lumens of brightness, and even in large rooms with high ceilings and plenty of light, there’s no trouble at all viewing images or videos.
One of my favorite things about projectors is their versatility, and that certainly rings true with ViewSonic’s LS550WH. With a 1,280 x 800 native resolution and a 3,000:1 contrast ratio it has all you need for any type of presentations you might have. It doesn’t have quite as high of a native resolution as some projectors I’ve used (3,000 x 2,000), but it more than makes up for it in brightness.
Color accuracy & depth
The ViewSonic LS550WH can be praised on many fronts, but one of its strongest attributes is its ability to display crisp, vibrant colors with sharp contrasts. Whether you’re watching a movie or playing a video game, you’ll get excellent visual quality out of these projectors. What makes them so impressive? Their 1.6 gain lens and 3-panel RGBRGB color wheel design help ensure that your images are as true-to-life as possible. If you want to see what your photos would look like printed in high definition, then check out what these projectors have to offer!
Brightness, visibility & adjustability
The ViewSonic LS550WH is a budget-friendly home theater projector that offers more than enough brightness for viewing in dark rooms. In fact, it features one of the brightest rated color brightness projectors of any model we’ve tested. Plus, it has incredible adjustability: Lens shift capability and horizontal keystone correction mean you have more control over your image than you might think. This adds up to an all-around solid home theater option – but how does it perform? Read our review to find out!
Ports & Connectivity
The Viewsonic LS550W has 1x HDMI port, 1x VGA Port, 1x USB Type A, and a built-in Microphone input. It doesn’t have any other media connections or other features on it. This is because it is designed to be used with a computer, so you can plug in your laptop and use it as an external monitor. I don’t see any reason why you couldn’t hook up another source like your Xbox One or PS4 to view content from them as well, but I didn’t test that functionality out. There are no speakers included with the projector either. You will need to connect your own sound system if you want sound while using it with a computer.
Build quality & Audio
With its full-metal construction and smooth rounded edges, it’s difficult not to notice just how good-looking ViewSonic’s LS550W is. On top of that, its build quality is excellent – strong enough to easily shrug off most knocks, but light enough that you can move it around fairly easily too. The unit also feels well-made, with a reassuringly solid feel when you pick it up or adjust any of its controls. The same goes for audio performance: while there’s no built-in speaker (which isn’t unusual for projectors in this price range), sound comes out clear and loud from an external speaker or set of headphones connected via one of two 3.5 mm jacks on the rear panel.
Though not perfect, ViewSonic’s LS550wh meets most home theater enthusiast needs. With a high native resolution, short throw lens, and full 3D support all at a bargain price, it’s hard to beat. Buyers who want 1080p and a longer throw distance can step up to ViewSonic’s Ultra-short-throw offering for only $100 more. While you won’t find any advanced features like edge-blending or motorized lenses in its class, those willing to spend a bit more on their projectors should definitely consider stepping up to ViewSonic’s next model line. It will be well worth your investment.
